Credit Utilization and Business Funding: Why Low Balances Matter More Than Your Score
"But my score is 750. How did I get denied?"
It's one of the most common questions we hear. The answer is usually one number that most people never look at: credit utilization. For business funding, especially unsecured and 0% options, utilization can make or break an approval even when your score looks great.
What Is Credit Utilization?
Utilization is how much of your available revolving credit you're using. If you have $20,000 in total card limits and $6,000 in balances, your utilization is 30%.
Lenders look at it two ways:
- Overall utilization: all your balances divided by all your limits.
- Per-card utilization: one maxed-out card can raise flags even if your overall number looks fine.
Why It Matters More for Funding
You've probably heard "keep it under 30%." That's fine for your score. Funding underwriters are pickier. They see high balances as a sign you're already stretched, and that makes them hesitant to extend more credit.
In one review of 104 client profiles approved for $50K–$325K in 0% capital, the approved profiles had utilization under 10%, alongside 720+ scores and no active charge-offs or collections. That's the zone to aim for.
How Utilization Gets Reported
Here's the detail most people miss: card issuers usually report your balance on your statement closing date, not your payment due date. So even if you pay in full every month, a big balance on your statement date can show up as high utilization.
5 Fastest Ways to Lower Utilization
- Pay before the statement closes. Make a payment a few days before your closing date so a lower balance gets reported.
- Pay down the highest-percentage cards first. Getting a maxed card under 50%, then under 10%, helps more than spreading payments thin.
- Don't close old cards. Closing a card removes its limit and pushes your utilization up.
- Ask for limit increases carefully. A higher limit lowers utilization, but some issuers do a hard pull to approve it. Ask first.
- Consolidate if you need to. A term loan can pay off card balances in one move. It's the strategy behind the term loan to 0% approach.
How Long Until It Shows Up?
Utilization has no memory in most scoring models. Once lower balances are reported, usually within one or two statement cycles, they can count right away. That makes it one of the fastest levers you can pull before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions
What credit utilization do lenders want for business funding?
For unsecured and 0% business funding, under 10% is the target. Under 30% is the general guideline for your score, but it's often not low enough for funding approvals.
Does business credit card utilization count?
Only if the card reports to your personal credit bureaus. Many business cards don't, but some do. Check how each of your cards reports.
Is 0% utilization best?
Not quite. Showing a small balance on at least one card can look slightly better than showing none. A tiny reported balance with everything else near zero is ideal.
